153rd (Wellington) Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force cap badge (1915–1917 pattern), manufactured by Ellis & Co. Ltd and dated 1916, original example of First World War military headdress insignia associated with the Canadian Expeditionary Force and the 153rd (Wellington) Battalion of Canada.

The badge features the battalion’s distinctive insignia in relief, incorporating Canadian military symbolism together with identifying titles relating to Wellington County, Ontario. Manufactured by Ellis & Co. Ltd, a recognised maker of Canadian military insignia, the badge reflects the high-quality production standards of wartime badge manufacture. The 1916 date places its production during the active recruitment and mobilisation phase of the battalion’s service.

Cap badges of this type were worn on military headwear by officers and enlisted personnel of the 153rd Battalion, serving as a visible symbol of unit identity and local pride. Raised in Wellington County, the battalion formed part of the rapid expansion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War.

Authorised in late 1915 and recruiting throughout 1916, the 153rd (Wellington) Battalion contributed reinforcements to Canadian units serving overseas after arriving in Britain. Like many battalions raised during the war, its legacy is closely tied to the enormous contribution made by Canadian volunteers to the Allied war effort.

Manufactured in brass with original attachment fittings to the reverse and maker-marked by Ellis & Co. Ltd, this example represents an authentic and highly collectable piece of Canadian First World War military history.
