Originally joined the 25th (Frontiersmen) Battalion, Royal Fusiliers as a private and entered the German East African front, specifically Mombasa, on May 4th, 1915. He was later promoted to Lance Corporal and moved to the 5th Battalion. He was discharged on the 22nd of December 1916 (according to his pension card), but likely served within the training grounds in Hounslow until the 29th of May 1918 (according to the medal roll)
