1st South African Infantry cap badge (1915–1919 pattern), original example of First World War-era insignia associated with the 1st South African Infantry Regiment of the Union Defence Force.
The badge features the regiment’s distinctive First World War design in relief, incorporating a South African springbok and the bilingual motto “Union is Strength / Eendracht Maakt Macht”, characteristic of the South African Infantry Brigade raised for service in Europe. The pattern reflects the wartime identity of South African infantry units serving alongside British and Commonwealth forces.
Cap badges of this type were worn on military headgear by other ranks of the 1st South African Infantry, serving as a visible symbol of regimental identity. The regiment was part of the South African Brigade, which was composed of volunteers drawn largely from the Union Defence Force for overseas service.
The 1st South African Infantry Regiment saw distinguished service during the First World War, particularly on the Western Front, including major engagements such as the Battle of Delville Wood in 1916. The regiment suffered heavy casualties and earned a strong reputation for bravery and endurance under some of the most intense fighting of the war.
Manufactured in gilding metal (brass) with original attachment fittings to the reverse, this example represents an authentic and historically significant piece of South African Great War military insignia.
