Late Victorian collar badge of the 58th (Rutlandshire) Regiment of Foot, and dating to the c.1874–1881 pattern worn before the turn of the 20th century. The design reflects the regiment’s castle and key motif with its motto “Montis Insignia Calpe” as well as the battle honour “Gibraltar”, a design used during the latter years of Queen Victoria’s reign. Collar badges of this period were worn in non-facing pairs on the standing collars of tunics and are characteristic of late 19th-century British infantry insignia.
The badge was originally manufactured in silver plate and gilt on bimetal (brass and white metal), die-struck with clear detail and period-appropriate proportions. The reverse is fitted with fixing lugs for attachment to the collar.

Condition
Very good, with clear detail and an even-aged patina. The lugs are intact and secure, and the badge shows little remaining gilt and silver plating on the obverse, consistent with age and period use.
