6th Queen Elizabeth’s Own Gurkha Rifles cap badge of the pattern worn between 1959 and 1994 by the 6th Queen Elizabeth’s Own Gurkha Rifles of the British Army. This Gurkha infantry cap badge displays the recognised insignia of the regiment in clear relief, incorporating the distinctive crossed kukris as the central device, representing the traditional fighting knives carried by Gurkha soldiers. The kukris are arranged beneath the Queen’s crown with a separate “6” below, a composition characteristic of late twentieth-century Gurkha regimental headdress insignia.
The crossed kukris device is the defining emblem of Gurkha regiments serving in the British Army and symbolises the long-standing martial traditions and battlefield reputation of Gurkha soldiers. The 6th Queen Elizabeth’s Own Gurkha Rifles served with distinction in the post-war period until 1994, when it amalgamated with several other Gurkha regiments to form the Royal Gurkha Rifles.
Manufactured as a two-part construction with separate central device and backing, consistent with later Gurkha regimental headdress insignia, this example provides a clear representation of the regimental pattern worn during the late twentieth century. 6th Gurkha Rifles cap badges are collected as examples of Gurkha militaria, British Army infantry insignia, and historic regimental uniform hardware.
