9th/12th Royal Lancers (Prince of Wales’s) officers’ cap badge, manufactured by J. R. Gaunt, representing the pattern worn between 1960 and 2015. This British Army cavalry cap badge displays the recognised 9th/12th Royal Lancers insignia in crisp relief, incorporating the regiment’s distinctive crossed lances, Prince of Wales’s feathers and scroll reading “IX-XII”, surmounted by the Queen’s crown, all executed in a gilt and silver finish consistent with officer-grade insignia.
The regiment was formed in 1960 through the amalgamation of the 9th Queen’s Royal Lancers and the 12th Royal Lancers, carrying forward the traditions of both cavalry units. The Prince of Wales’s feathers reflect royal patronage, while the crowned design denotes service under the British sovereign, including the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. Officers’ badges of this type were worn on service dress and ceremonial headdress, reflecting rank and regimental identity.
Manufactured in high-quality gilt and silver-plated metal with standard fittings to the reverse, this example provides a well-defined representation of modern British cavalry insignia. Badges by J. R. Gaunt are noted for their quality and are widely collected within the field of British militaria.
