Abu Hamed clasp, original example of the campaign bar awarded with the Khedive Sudan Medal for service during the Sudan Campaign of 1896–1898.

Manufactured in silver, this original “Abu Hamed” clasp was awarded to officers and men of the British and Egyptian forces who participated in the capture of the strategically important town of Abu Hamed during the Mahdist War. The clasp was attached to the ribbon of the Khedive Sudan Medal, denoting participation in one of the key operations that paved the way for the Anglo-Egyptian reconquest of the Sudan.

The Battle of Abu Hamed, fought on 7 August 1897, was a decisive engagement led by Herbert Kitchener as part of his campaign to defeat the Mahdist forces and restore Anglo-Egyptian control over the Sudan. A flying column commanded by Archibald Hunter undertook a demanding desert march before launching a successful assault on the Mahdist garrison. The capture of Abu Hamed secured a vital section of the Nile, enabling the construction of the military railway that supported the advance towards Omdurman.

The clasp was awarded to British Army units, Egyptian Army battalions, and supporting forces who took part in the operation. The victory at Abu Hamed proved to be a significant strategic success, allowing supplies and reinforcements to move more efficiently through the region and contributing directly to the eventual defeat of the Mahdist State.

Original Sudan Medal clasps are highly sought after by collectors of Victorian campaign medals and British Empire militaria. Individual clasps such as Abu Hamed are particularly desirable for medal restoration projects, specialist collections, and displays illustrating the Anglo-Egyptian campaigns in the Sudan.

Manufactured in silver and retaining its original construction, this example represents an authentic and collectable piece of late Victorian military history.
