African Union Mission in Sudan (AMIS) medal, original example of a modern peacekeeping and campaign award associated with the African Union Mission in Sudan (AMIS).
The medal was awarded to military personnel, police officers, and civilian staff who served with the African Union Mission in Sudan, an international peacekeeping operation established by the African Union in 2004. The mission was deployed primarily to the Darfur region of Sudan to monitor ceasefire agreements, support humanitarian efforts, and assist in the protection of civilians affected by conflict.
The decoration features the emblem of the African Union, suspended from a distinctive ribbon r. As with many international service medals, the award recognised a qualifying period of operational service rather than acts of gallantry.
AMIS represented one of the African Union’s most significant early peacekeeping operations and involved personnel contributed by numerous African nations, as well as support from international partners. In 2007, responsibility for the mission was transferred to the joint African Union–United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID), marking an important development in multinational peacekeeping efforts in the region.
Campaign and service medals connected with African Union operations have become increasingly collectable due to their historical significance and their association with modern international peace support missions.
Manufactured in gold-coloured metal and suspended from its original ribbon, this example represents an important piece of contemporary African peacekeeping and military history.
