Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS) brass lapel brooch badge, manufactured by J. R. Gaunt, London, original example of British women’s wartime military insignia associated with the Auxiliary Territorial Service.
Manufactured in brass by the renowned military badge maker J. R. Gaunt & Son Ltd of London, this lapel brooch badge features the distinctive ATS insignia and was designed for wear on civilian clothing by members of the service or supporters during the period of the Second World War.
The Auxiliary Territorial Service was formed in September 1938 as the women’s auxiliary branch of the British Army, created to provide trained female personnel for non-combatant military duties. During the Second World War, hundreds of thousands of women served in the ATS, undertaking a wide range of vital roles including clerical work, communications, anti-aircraft operations, driving, mechanical duties, catering, and administration.
Members of the ATS served throughout the United Kingdom and overseas, supporting British and Allied forces in every major theatre. Their contribution was essential to the wartime mobilisation effort, allowing large numbers of male soldiers to be released for frontline service. In 1941, the ATS became part of the British Army structure, and in 1949 it was succeeded by the Women’s Royal Army Corps.
J. R. Gaunt & Son was one of Britain’s leading manufacturers of military insignia, producing badges, buttons, and accoutrements for the armed forces and numerous organisations throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Badges bearing the Gaunt maker’s mark are highly regarded by collectors due to the company’s reputation for quality manufacture.
Original ATS lapel badges are popular with collectors of women’s military history, Second World War memorabilia, and British home front insignia. They represent the important contribution made by women to Britain’s wartime armed forces.
Manufactured in brass with its original brooch fitting and maker identification, this example represents an authentic and collectable piece of British wartime history.
