The medal typically features an embossed five-pointed star above the relief inscription on five rows “1940 1945, PRO PATRIA ET VICTORIA”, between vertical laurel leaves. The smooth reverse is plain.
Instituted following the war, the decoration acknowledges the significant role played by colonial forces and infrastructure in sustaining the Allied war effort. The Belgian Congo in particular was a vital source of raw materials, including uranium and rubber, as well as manpower for the Force Publique, which served in several African campaigns.
