This contemporary tailor’s copy faithfully reproduces the “Benin River 1894” clasp issued with the East and West Africa Medal 1887–1900. Unlike modern reproductions, these period-made tailor’s copies were manufactured during or shortly after the Victorian period by military outfitters for wear on uniforms, replacement of damaged clasps, or completion of privately mounted medal groups. Today, they are recognised by collectors as historic artefacts, reflecting late Victorian military tailoring and medal mounting practices.

The original Benin River 1894 clasp was awarded to officers and men of the British Army, Royal Navy, Royal Marines, and locally raised colonial forces who took part in operations on the Benin River in 1894, in what is now southern Nigeria. The campaign was undertaken following increasing tensions between British traders and the Kingdom of Benin, leading to a naval and military expedition to protect British interests and enforce colonial authority in the region.

The operation was centred around the Benin River area, where British forces conducted actions against local resistance and secured control of strategically important waterways. Naval forces played a particularly important role, using river transport and armed vessels to support the movement of troops and supplies through the difficult coastal and riverine environment of West Africa.

The Benin River 1894 clasp is one of the recognised clasps issued with the East and West Africa Medal 1887–1900 and remains desirable among collectors of Victorian campaign medals, British colonial history, and West African military operations.

Contemporary tailor’s copies were often produced by military outfitters to closely replicate officially issued clasps for wear on mounted medal groups or display. Although not officially issued by the Crown, these period-made copies are increasingly appreciated for their historical authenticity and their association with nineteenth-century military dress traditions.

This example represents an attractive period-made copy of an important West African campaign clasp and would make an excellent addition to a collection of East and West Africa Medal clasps, British campaign medals, or Victorian military memorabilia.
