Original Berkshire Yeomanry cap badge, associated with the volunteer cavalry regiment of the Royal County of Berkshire. The regiment traces its origins to 1794, when local volunteer cavalry troops were raised during the French Revolutionary Wars. It subsequently served in the Second Boer War as part of the Imperial Yeomanry and was reorganised as part of the Territorial Force in 1908. During the First World War, the regiment served overseas, including in Egypt and Palestine, before being converted to an artillery role in 1921.
The badge incorporates the distinctive White Horse of Uffington, an ancient hill figure located in Berkshire, above a scroll bearing the regimental title. The White Horse is a longstanding symbol of the county and was adopted as a central element of the Berkshire Yeomanry’s insignia. The 1908–1921 pattern represents the period following the regiment’s incorporation into the Territorial Force and before the Second World War-era changes associated with its conversion to artillery. This original example is of interest to collectors of British Yeomanry insignia, First World War cavalry militaria and Berkshire military history.
