Border Regiment collar badge (1881–1906 pattern), original example of Victorian British Army regimental insignia associated with the Border Regiment.

Manufactured in white metal, this collar badge was worn on the service dress or full dress tunic by other ranks of the Border Regiment. Introduced following the regiment’s formation in 1881, the badge reflects the distinctive identity and traditions established during the late Victorian era and remained in use until 1906, making it one of the earliest patterns associated with the regiment.

The Border Regiment was formed as part of the Childers Reforms through the amalgamation of the 34th (Cumberland) Regiment of Foot and the 55th (Westmorland) Regiment of Foot. Recruiting primarily from the historic counties of Cumberland and Westmorland, the regiment inherited the honours and traditions of both predecessor regiments and quickly established a reputation for disciplined service throughout the British Empire.

During the period in which this collar badge was worn, the Border Regiment served on imperial campaigns including the Second Boer War, where its battalions earned distinction in South Africa. The regiment later went on to serve with great distinction during the First World War and World War II before amalgamating with the King’s Own Royal Regiment (Lancaster) in 1959 to form the King’s Own Royal Border Regiment.

Original collar badges dating from the regiment’s first twenty-five years are comparatively scarce due to their limited production period and continued service wear. They remain highly desirable to collectors of Victorian and Edwardian British military insignia.

Manufactured in white metal with original attachment fittings to the reverse, this example represents an authentic and historically significant piece of British regimental history.
