Border Regiment Collar Badge (1885–1895 Pattern), a Victorian British Army regimental collar badge associated with The Border Regiment during the late nineteenth century. The badge represents the regiment’s early post-Childers Reforms identity and is of particular interest to collectors of Victorian military insignia, British Army collar badges, infantry regiments, and Border Regiment militaria.
The Border Regiment was formed in 1881 through the amalgamation of the 34th (Cumberland) Regiment of Foot and the 55th (Westmorland) Regiment of Foot. The 1885–1895 pattern belongs to an important period in the regiment’s development, covering the late Victorian Army and its service during a period of extensive British military activity overseas. Regimental collar badges were worn as part of the military uniform and provided distinctive identification at the regimental level.
This early pattern is particularly suitable for collectors of Victorian British Army badges, pre-1900 regimental insignia, Cumberland and Westmorland military history, and Border Regiment memorabilia. Its relatively short 1885–1895 pattern period also makes it a useful example for collections specialising in early British regimental insignia.
