British 1845 Pattern Royal Artillery Officer’s Sword with scabbard, dated 1985, a late 20th-century example of the long-established British Army pattern, produced for ceremonial and dress use. This sword is associated with the Royal Artillery and is named as awarded to “WO1 (RSM) Hewett, W.A.”, reflecting presentation within a commissioned officer context.

The sword follows the classic 1845 pattern form, featuring a slightly curved, single-fullered blade etched with decorative panels, including the royal cypher of Elizabeth II (ERII), regimental motifs, artillery devices such as crossed guns, and foliage as well as the makers’ mark of an “H” in a diamond, abbreviated NATO part number “973-6876”, and date “1985”. The blade is also laser-engraved with the following: “Presented To / WO1 (RSM) Hewett W A / by / Sergeant’s Mess 2 Field Regiment Royal Artillery / On Commissioning / October 1986”.

The hilt is of the Gothic style, incorporating a pierced 3-bar, nickel-plated guard, along with a blackish shagreen grip bound with twisted wire, maintaining the traditional appearance associated with British officer swords.

Although originally introduced in the mid-19th century, the 1845 pattern has remained in continued ceremonial use, particularly within regiments such as the Royal Artillery. By 1985, examples were produced primarily for dress occasions, parades, and formal functions, rather than field service, reflecting the enduring heritage and continuity of British Army traditions.

This example is accompanied by its scabbard of leather construction with brass rings for wear on Sam Browne webbing, completing the set for wear or display. The attribution to WO1 (RSM) Hewett suggests presentation, long service recognition, or regimental significance, adding a personal historical element to the piece.

British-manufactured using traditional methods and materials, this sword represents the continuation of historic British military design into the modern era. Examples of this type are collected for their combination of regimental association, ceremonial function, and named provenance.
