An original British 1907 Pattern bayonet manufactured by Wilkinson in 1915. This pattern was the standard bayonet for the Short Magazine Lee-Enfield (SMLE) rifle throughout the First World War. Produced by several major makers, the Wilkinson Sword Company was one of the key wartime contractors, supplying high-quality equipment to the British and Commonwealth Armies.
This example features a single-edged, fullered steel blade with a distinct point. The ricasso bears the Wilkinson maker’s mark, crown inspection stamp, and date “(?) ’15”. The steel crossguard has a muzzle ring, and the pommel incorporates a working press-catch release. Fitted with original wooden grips secured by two bolts. Complete with its steel-mounted black leather scabbard.
Marked on the pommel with the Union of South Africa acceptance mark “U (Broad Arrow)”
Dimensions
Overall length (bayonet): approx. 555mm
Blade length: approx. 430mm
Condition
Acceptable condition. The blade retains most of its markings with little of its original finish remaining. The wooden grips are bruised, a reflection of their age, but remain secure. The scabbard leather is in good condition, and the mounts are relatively worn but firm. The locking catch is functional.
