Brunei Proclamation of Independence medal, an original commemorative award issued to mark the proclamation of Brunei’s independence and the establishment of the nation as a fully sovereign state.
The medal commemorates the historic proclamation of Brunei’s independence on 1 January 1984, when the country formally concluded its status as a British-protected state and assumed full sovereignty under the reign of Hassanal Bolkiah. The award was instituted to celebrate this significant national milestone and to honour those who contributed to, or participated in, the independence celebrations.
Brunei achieved internal self-government in 1959 under a new constitution, while defence and foreign affairs remained the responsibility of the United Kingdom until full independence was proclaimed in 1984. Since then, the nation has remained a sovereign constitutional sultanate under the leadership of the Sultan, with the Royal Brunei Armed Forces playing an important role in the country’s defence and national identity.
Original Bruneian commemorative medals are considerably less common than British or Commonwealth awards, making them desirable additions to collections of modern military and Commonwealth honours.
Manufactured in gilt metal and suspended from its original ribbon, this example represents an attractive and historically significant piece of Bruneian commemorative history.
