Czechoslovak Republic, Order of Charles IV (Řád Karla IV), Badge of Honour for Military Preparedness (Čestný Odznak Za Budování Brannosti), 1st Class, Gilt Bronze, 1945–1948

Czechoslovak Republic Badge of Honour for Military Preparedness, 1st Class, in gilt bronze, produced between 1945 and 1948 as the highest grade of the badge instituted within the Order of Charles IV framework of the Third Czechoslovak Republic. This Czechoslovak state honour displays the recognised device in clear relief, incorporating a sunburst of alternating pointed and faceted rays as the outer device, with crossed swords, the whole framing a central oval medallion bearing the crowned effigy of King Charles IV of Bohemia facing forward, within a circlet inscribed “ZA BUDOVÁNÍ BRANNOSTI” (Czech: “For the Building of Military Preparedness”). The 1st Class is produced in gilt bronze throughout, distinguished from the 2nd Class of the same badge, which was produced in silvered bronze. The reverse carries a pin fitting for wear on the uniform. The badge is catalogued in the standard Czechoslovak phaleristics reference as VM 162a.

The Badge of Honour for Military Preparedness was instituted as part of the Order of Charles IV, a system of military and civil honours established by the Third Czechoslovak Republic following liberation in May 1945. The Order was named in honour of King Charles IV of Bohemia — Karel IV in Czech — who reigned from 1347 to 1378 as King of Bohemia and from 1355 as Holy Roman Emperor and under whose reign Prague became one of the cultural and political capitals of mediaeval Europe, earning him the title “Father of the Homeland” (Otec vlasti) in Czech national consciousness. The use of Charles IV’s crowned effigy as the central device of the badge was a deliberate affirmation of the Czechoslovak state’s continuity with the historical Bohemian kingdom and its mediaeval heritage, in contrast to both the German occupation and the communist ideology that would supplant the Third Republic in February 1948. The Badge for Military Preparedness was awarded to civilians and military personnel who had made significant contributions to the development and strengthening of Czechoslovakia’s military capacity and civil defence preparedness in the post-liberation period of 1945 to 1948. The Third Czechoslovak Republic lasted only until the communist coup of February 1948, which terminated the award system of the Order of Charles IV and replaced it with a new set of communist-era decorations aligned with Soviet models — making all Third Republic awards of this type confined to a production and award window of approximately three years, and thus genuinely scarce in original form.

Manufactured in gilt bronze consistent with the Third Czechoslovak Republic military preparedness badge production of 1945 to 1948, this 1st Class example provides a well-defined representation of the highest grade of this award as issued in the final years of democratic Czechoslovakia before the communist takeover. Order of Charles IV badges of honour for military preparedness are collected as examples of Third Czechoslovak Republic military and civil honour insignia, faleristics of the 1945–1948 democratic interlude, and decorations associated with the reconstruction of Czechoslovakia’s armed forces in the immediate post-liberation period.
