Devonshire Regiment uniform button, 18mm size, of the pattern worn between 1881 and 1901 during the late Victorian period. This button features the regiment’s recognised device in fine relief, incorporating the cap badge design, with the castle emblem and surrounding title “The Devonshire Regiment” on a starburst backing, surmounted by the Queen Victoria Crown, all executed in brass consistent with service and dress uniform fittings of the era.
The castle motif reflects the regiment’s historic association with Exeter and the county of Devon, forming a key element of regimental identity. The 1881 pattern dates from the Childers Reforms, which formalised regimental titles and structure within the British Army. This period falls within the reign of Queen Victoria, and such buttons were worn on tunics and other uniform items by officers and enlisted men alike.
Manufactured in brass with a loop shank fitting to the reverse, this 18mm example provides a well-defined representation of Victorian British Army insignia. Devonshire Regiment buttons are collected as examples of nineteenth-century militaria, regimental uniform components, and British infantry history.
