Duke of Lancaster’s Own Yeomanry gilt sweetheart brooch badge, original example of British regimental sweetheart jewellery associated with the Duke of Lancaster’s Own Yeomanry.
Manufactured in gilt metal, this sweetheart brooch features the distinctive badge of the Duke of Lancaster’s Own Yeomanry and is fitted with a brooch pin to the reverse for wear on civilian clothing. Sweetheart brooches were popular personal keepsakes, purchased by serving soldiers or presented to wives, fiancées, mothers, and sweethearts as enduring symbols of regimental pride and affection.
The Duke of Lancaster’s Own Yeomanry traces its origins to 1798, when volunteer cavalry units were raised in Lancashire in response to the threat of invasion during the French Revolutionary Wars. Over the following century, the regiment developed into one of Britain’s senior Yeomanry cavalry regiments, recruiting throughout Lancashire while maintaining a close association with the Duchy of Lancaster.
During the Second Boer War, members of the regiment volunteered for service with the Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa. In the First World War, the regiment served both as mounted troops and later in dismounted roles, with its various battalions seeing service in Egypt, Gallipoli, and on the Western Front. During World War II, the regiment converted to an armoured role, serving with distinction in North Africa and Italy as part of the Royal Armoured Corps.
Sweetheart brooches became especially popular during both World Wars, allowing family members and loved ones to display their connection to a serving soldier. Original gilt examples representing Yeomanry regiments are increasingly sought after by collectors due to their attractive design, sentimental significance, and association with Britain’s volunteer cavalry tradition.
Manufactured in gilt metal and retaining its original brooch fitting to the reverse, this example represents an authentic and collectable piece of British regimental and social history.
