East Surrey Regiment Cap Badge (1881-1898 Pattern) – Restrike

East Surrey Regiment cap badge, 1881–1898 pattern, restrike example of the early badge worn by the regiment during the closing years of the Victorian period. The badge was introduced following the formation of the East Surrey Regiment in 1881 and predates the better-known 1898 pattern, the design of which remained in use with little change for much of the regiment’s later history.

The badge features a prominent eight-pointed Garter star, with the upper point concealed by a Victorian crown. At the centre is a shield bearing the Arms of Guildford, incorporating the town’s castle with a circlet surrounding it inscribed “East Surrey”. The early other ranks’ pattern was produced in brass, giving the badge its distinctive appearance.

The East Surrey Regiment was formed in 1881 through the amalgamation of the 31st (Huntingdonshire) Regiment of Foot and the 70th (Surrey) Regiment of Foot, which became its 1st and 2nd Battalions, respectively. The use of the Garter star and Guildford arms established the principal heraldic features that continued into later East Surrey insignia.

This restrike is of particular interest to collectors of East Surrey Regiment badges, Victorian British Army insignia, early regimental cap badges, bimetal cap badges, British infantry badges, Victorian militaria and 19th-century military insignia. It should be distinguished from an original period-issued example and is offered specifically as a restrike.
