East Surrey Regiment silver-plated and gilt officer’s collar badge (c. 1894–1903 pattern), original example of Victorian British Army officer’s insignia associated with the East Surrey Regiment.
This finely made officer-quality collar badge features the regiment’s distinctive insignia in a combination of silver plate and gilt, reflecting the superior craftsmanship and materials traditionally reserved for officers’ uniforms. The bi-metal construction enhances the detail of the design and exemplifies the high standard of British military insignia produced during the late Victorian and early Edwardian periods.
Collar badges of this pattern were worn in matched pairs on the service dress and full dress tunics of officers, serving as an important symbol of regimental identity and rank. Dating from approximately 1894 to 1903, this pattern represents the transitional period between the late Victorian Army and the reforms that followed the Second Boer War.
The East Surrey Regiment was formed in 1881 as part of the Childers Reforms through the amalgamation of the 31st (Huntingdonshire) Regiment of Foot and the 70th (Surrey) Regiment of Foot. During the period in which this badge was worn, the regiment saw active service in India and South Africa, earning distinction during the Second Boer War before later serving with great distinction in the First World War and World War II. In 1959, it amalgamated with the Queen’s Royal Regiment (West Surrey) to form the Queen’s Royal Surrey Regiment.
Officer-quality badges from this era are particularly sought after due to their attractive construction, limited production, and association with Britain’s professional Victorian Army. Their use of silver plate and gilt provides a striking contrast that distinguishes them from other ranks’ brass insignia.
Manufactured in silver-plated and gilt metal with original attachment fittings to the reverse, this example represents an elegant and highly collectable piece of British military insignia.
