Essex Regiment cap badge produced as a restrike of the economy pattern worn between 1916 and 1918 by the Essex Regiment of the British Army. This British Army infantry cap badge displays the recognised insignia of the regiment in clear relief, incorporating the castle and key as the central device, surmounted by the Sphinx and battle honour “Egypt”, set above a scroll bearing the regimental title “The Essex Regt”. The design is simplified in accordance with wartime economy measures and is arranged in a composition characteristic of First World War period headdress insignia.
The castle and key device is derived from the arms of Gibraltar and reflects the regiment’s distinction in the defence of the fortress during the eighteenth century, for which it was granted the honour. The economy pattern badges were introduced during the First World War to reduce manufacturing complexity and conserve materials while maintaining regimental identity in the field.
Manufactured in brass consistent with wartime service dress insignia, this restrike example provides a clear representation of the simplified pattern used during the later years of the war. Essex Regiment cap badges are collected as examples of First World War militaria, British Army infantry insignia, and historic regimental uniform hardware.
