Essex Yeomanry broach-collar badge, dating from the early twentieth century and associated with the formation of the Essex Imperial Yeomanry in 1901. The regiment was raised following the Second Boer War, drawing on the renewed interest in mounted volunteer forces after the conflict in South Africa. In 1908, following the establishment of the Territorial Force, the regiment adopted the title Essex Yeomanry, marking a new phase in its organisation and service.
The badge bears the motto “AUDACITER ET SINCERE”, meaning “Boldly and Sincerely”, which was used on the regiment’s early insignia before being replaced in 1909 by “DECUS ET TUTAMEN”. The broached construction incorporates a pin-style fitting on the reverse for attachment to the uniform collar. This early pattern is of interest to collectors of British Yeomanry insignia, Edwardian military badges and Essex military history.
