An original French 75mm Mle 1897 field artillery shell case, clearly dated 1914, offered as an empty/inert display piece. The 75mm Model 1897 was one of the more common French quick-firing field guns of the First World War; its brass shell cases are sought after by collectors and museums for their historic headstamps and attractive brass patina.
This example is of drawn brass construction with clearly struck base markings, including calibre designation and manufacturer or arsenal stamps. The case mouth and rim retain the correct form for the Mle 1897 service cartridge and present well for display or trench-art use.
The headstamp reads “75 DE C / MAI. 58L. 14. S”
Dimensions
Overall height: approx. 347mm
Base diameter: approx. 87mm
Rim/head diameter: approx. 75mm
Condition
Good. The shell case is empty and inert for display. Brass exhibits an even-aged patina with toning and a deep dent on one side from firing. The headstamps mostly remain clear and legible. The rim of the case’s mouth is distorted with no splits or major dents noted. Other surface dings are present, typical of a First World War-dated artillery case, but structurally sound for mounting or cabinet display.
