French Croix de Guerre 1914–1917 medal, an original example of one of France’s most distinguished military decorations, awarded for acts of bravery and mentions in dispatches during the early years of the First World War.
Instituted in 1915, the Croix de Guerre 1914–1918 was created to recognise French and allied military personnel who had been cited for gallant conduct in the face of the enemy. The medal quickly became one of the most respected awards of the Great War and was frequently bestowed upon soldiers, sailors, airmen, and occasionally civilians who distinguished themselves through courage and devotion to duty.
The decoration takes the form of a bronze cross pattée with crossed swords between the arms. The obverse features the effigy of the French Republic, while the reverse bears the dates “1914–1917”, identifying examples awarded during the earlier period of the war before the final date was amended to reflect subsequent years of conflict. The ribbon is green with red vertical stripes and would carry stars or palms denoting the level of citation awarded to the recipient.
The Croix de Guerre was awarded not only to French servicemen but also to many members of allied forces, including personnel from Britain, the Commonwealth, Belgium, Italy, Russia, and the United States. Entire units and formations could also be cited and awarded the decoration collectively for exceptional service in combat.
Manufactured in bronze and suspended from its distinctive ribbon, this example represents an iconic and highly collectable piece of First World War military history.
