An original French Model 1874 Gras bayonet, manufactured at the national arms factory of St. Etienne in August 1877. The M1874 Gras bayonet was the standard issue sidearm for the Gras rifle (Mle 1874), adopted by the French Army following the Franco-Prussian War. Designed as a robust thrusting weapon, the Gras bayonet was widely distributed across French and colonial forces.
This example features a full-length steel blade with a single fuller, stamped on the spine with the arsenal marking and manufacture date, “mfre d’armes St. Etienne, 8bre 1877″. The brass hilt incorporates a steel crossguard with a muzzle ring and a working press-stud locking mechanism. Complete with its original steel scabbard.
