General Service button (pre-1902 pattern) – 12mm, original example of British military uniform insignia dating from the Victorian era and the reign of Queen Victoria.

The button features the traditional General Service design in relief, incorporating the Royal Arms surmounted by the Victorian Crown. This pattern was widely used throughout the British Army during the 19th century. It became one of the most recognisable military button designs of the period, appearing on a wide range of uniforms worn by officers and other ranks.

Buttons of this type were worn on military tunics, patrol jackets, greatcoats, and other items of dress where a standardised button was required. The 12mm size was typically used on smaller uniform fittings such as shoulder straps, cuffs, pockets, and forage caps, complementing the larger buttons worn on the front of tunics and coats.

The General Service button was adopted across numerous branches of the British Army and saw extensive use during many of the major campaigns of the Victorian era, including imperial and colonial service throughout the British Empire. Pre-1902 examples are distinguished by the use of the Victorian Crown, making them particularly desirable to collectors of Victorian military insignia.

Manufactured in brass with an original shank fitting to the reverse, this example represents a classic piece of 19th-century British military uniform hardware.
