German Iron Cross (Eisernes Kreuz) 1939, 2nd Class, manufactured by Franz Petzl of Vienna. This decoration follows the standard 1939 pattern reintroduced at the outbreak of the Second World War, based on the original design first instituted in 1813.
The cross is of three-piece construction, comprising a magnetic iron core set within a two-part frame, finished in silve-plated metal. The obverse features a central swastika with the date “1939” to the lower arm, while the reverse bears the date “1813”, referencing the original institution of the award. The suspension ring is stamped with a maker’s code, identifying the manufacturer, in this case “120”, attributed to Franz Petzl.
The Iron Cross 2nd Class was awarded for acts of bravery in the face of the enemy or for military merit. It was commonly worn suspended from its ribbon, passed through the second buttonhole of the tunic. The ribbon is black with white edges and a red central stripe, reflecting the traditional colours of the decoration.
Maker-marked examples are of particular interest for study and comparison within the broader range of wartime production.
