Manufactured in white metal, this distinctive back badge was worn on the rear of the headdress by soldiers of the Gloucestershire Regiment, making the regiment unique within the British Army. The badge commemorates the extraordinary gallantry displayed by the 28th (North Gloucestershire) Regiment of Foot at the Battle of Alexandria in 1801.
During the battle, the 28th Regiment was attacked simultaneously from the front and rear by French forces. Ordered to hold its ground, the regiment famously turned its rear rank to face the attack from behind while the front rank continued to engage the enemy ahead. Fighting back-to-back, the regiment successfully repelled both assaults and earned lasting distinction for its discipline and courage. In recognition of this remarkable feat, it was granted the unique honour of wearing a badge on the back of the headdress as well as the front—an honour retained by its successors for over 150 years.
The Gloucestershire Regiment was formed in 1881 under the Childers Reforms through the amalgamation of the 28th (North Gloucestershire) Regiment of Foot and the 61st (South Gloucestershire) Regiment of Foot. The regiment served with distinction during the Second Boer War, the First World War, and World War II, while its stand at the Battle of the Imjin River during the Korean War further cemented its reputation for exceptional bravery.
The white metal back badge became one of the most recognisable and cherished items of British regimental insignia, symbolising the regiment’s proud motto of maintaining steadfastness under pressure. Original examples are highly sought after by collectors due to their unique history and direct association with one of the British Army’s most distinctive traditions.
Manufactured in white metal with original attachment fittings to the reverse, this example represents an authentic and historically significant piece of British regimental heritage.
