Hertfordshire Yeomanry Cavalry officer’s silver-plated button, pre-1901 pattern, dating from the Victorian period (although reissued from 1947 to 1961). The button bears Queen Victoria’s crown and is associated with the Hertfordshire Yeomanry Cavalry, a mounted volunteer unit established in the county during the nineteenth century. As an officer’s example, the silver-plated construction represents the higher-quality uniform appointments associated with Yeomanry officers.
The Hertfordshire Yeomanry Cavalry, commonly known as the Harts Yeomanry Cavalry, formed part of the British volunteer cavalry tradition and provided a mounted military force drawn from the county. Its insignia and uniform buttons are of particular interest to collectors of Victorian Yeomanry, British cavalry buttons, Volunteer Force militaria and Hertfordshire military history.
The pre-1901 designation places this example before the introduction of the King’s Crown following the accession of Edward VII, making it a useful early Yeomanry uniform button for collectors of Victorian British military insignia.
