An original Imperial German Seitengewehr 1898/05 1st pattern butcher bayonet, manufactured by Simson & Co, Suhl, during the First World War and dated 1915. Designed for use with the Mauser Gewehr 98 rifle, the heavy butcher-style blade is fullered with a single edge. The steel crossguard features a swept quillon and a muzzle cutout for the barrel, with grooved wooden slab grips secured by rivets to the full tang. The pommel has the standard push-button release catch.

The ricasso is stamped with the maker’s mark “SIMON & CO / SUHL” and dated “15” on the spine, with additional inspection marks present here as well as above the catch on the pommel.

Condition
Very good, the blade is in very good to excellent condition and retains its profile with minimal discolouration. The wooden grips are secure with some wear and bruising. The locking catch is functional. Scabbard has been painted aquamarine, possibly during its serving life, which some has flaked. All fittings remain secure.
