North West Frontier clasp – contemporary tailor’s copy, period-made example of the campaign clasp awarded with the India General Service Medal (1854) for service during operations on the North West Frontier of India.

This contemporary tailor’s copy faithfully reproduces the “North West Frontier” clasp, one of the campaign bars awarded to recipients of the India General Service Medal (1854). Unlike modern reproductions, tailor’s copies were manufactured during or shortly after the Victorian period for wear on uniforms, display, or as privately purchased replacements when original medals or clasps were unavailable. These period-made examples are recognised by collectors as historic artefacts that reflect nineteenth-century military outfitting and medal-wearing practices.

The original North West Frontier clasp was authorised for officers and men of the British Army and Indian Army who served in operations along the turbulent frontier regions of British India. The clasp covered a range of frontier operations conducted in the late nineteenth century, in which British and Indian forces were frequently deployed against tribal groups resisting colonial expansion and seeking to maintain control over strategically important mountain passes and territories.

The North West Frontier represented one of the most challenging environments faced by the Victorian military. Troops operated across rugged mountainous terrain, often in extreme weather conditions, conducting punitive expeditions, defensive operations, and escorts through areas where supply lines and communications were difficult to maintain. British and Indian units developed specialised methods of mountain warfare during these campaigns, with infantry, cavalry, artillery, and locally raised forces all playing important roles.

Clasps from the India General Service Medal series are highly regarded by collectors due to their association with Britain’s imperial campaigns and the extensive military history of the Indian Army.
