An original First World War British No. 23 Mk. I Mills Bomb, dated August 1916 and rendered completely inert. The No. 23 was an updated version of the earlier No. 5 Mills grenade, adapted for both hand-throwing and rifle launching. This example retains its cast-iron segmented body with its original brass base plug, which bears manufacturer’s markings “Elmbank, Glasgow / No. 23 Mk. I” and a date of “8/16” (August 1916).
Condition
Good. The grenade body is fairly pitted, but the external fragmentation pattern is still very clear. The brass components show age patina and light surface wear, consistent with storage and handling. All parts are free from active fillings and are permanently inert.
