Uniform button associated with the Irish Volunteers, later the Irish Defence Forces, dating to the early 20th century period surrounding the establishment of the Irish Free State. Buttons of this type were worn on service and dress uniforms during the formative years of Ireland’s national military forces, reflecting the transitional era from the Volunteer movement to a regular standing army.

Manufactured in brass, the button is die-struck with clear detail and bears the harp emblem, a long-established symbol of Ireland, with initials “I V”. The reverse is fitted with a loose shank for sewing to uniform garments.

Diameter
25mm

Condition
Very good, with well-defined detail and an attractive aged patina. Light surface wear is present, consistent with age and use, and the shank remains intact and secure.
