Oppy Wood, immortalised in paint in a famous picture by war artist John Nash, was an important part of the front line near Arras in the Great War. Contested by both sides, the wood remained the centre of fierce fighting from the British attack before Arras in April 1917, to the great German Spring offensives a year later. Much of the brunt of the fighting was borne by northerners from the East Yorkshire (Hull) and East Lancashire regiments who lie in the war cemeteries that dot the area today.
