Original French briquet sabre of the early Napoleonic period, a short infantry sidearm widely associated with French forces during the era of Napoleon Bonaparte and the Napoleonic Wars. The briquet sabre was issued primarily to infantry troops, artillerymen, and various support units of the French Army, serving both as a weapon and as a practical field tool.
This pattern typically features a short, curved steel blade with a distinctive cast brass hilt. The hilt incorporates a ribbed grip with an integral knuckle bow and a rounded pommel cap, forming a robust one-piece casting characteristic of French military manufacture of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Early examples often follow the style introduced under the late eighteenth-century French military reforms and continued in use throughout the Napoleonic campaigns.
The accompanying scabbard is generally constructed from leather with brass mounts or, on some later examples, entirely of brass. These sabres were widely carried by French infantry regiments and artillery units, becoming one of the most recognisable short swords of the Napoleonic era.
