Rhodesia Railways uniform button, dating from the period 1937–1979 and associated with the railway administration serving Southern Rhodesia and, subsequently, Rhodesia. The railway network was an important part of the region’s transport infrastructure, connecting major centres and supporting passenger travel, commercial trade and the movement of goods across southern Africa. Rhodesia Railways insignia is collected as part of the wider field of British colonial, African transport and railway memorabilia.
The button represents the uniformed staff of Rhodesia Railways and the distinctive corporate identity of the railway organisation. Its 1937–1979 pattern covers the later colonial period, the establishment of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, and the subsequent period of Rhodesian administration, ending with the transition to Zimbabwe in 1980. Railway uniform buttons are of particular interest to collectors of transport history, railwayana and institutional insignia from the former British territories in Africa.
