Royal Army Chaplains’ Department (Christian) officer’s cap badge, an original example of British Army officer insignia associated with the Royal Army Chaplains’ Department.
The badge features the distinctive insignia of the Royal Army Chaplains’ Department in a finely executed officer-quality finish, combining gilt and silver-plated elements with blue enamel detailing. Surmounted by the Queen’s Crown, the badge dates from the reign of Elizabeth II and reflects the post-1953 pattern of British military insignia.
The design incorporates the Christian emblem traditionally associated with the department, symbolising the spiritual and pastoral roles of Army chaplains. Officer-quality badges were privately purchased and manufactured to a higher standard than other ranks’ insignia, often employing precious metal finishes and enamel work to achieve a more refined appearance.
Cap badges of this type were worn on service dress and other forms of military headwear by commissioned chaplains serving with the British Army. Chaplains provided religious services, pastoral care, and moral support to soldiers both in peacetime and during active operations, serving alongside troops in all theatres of war.
Founded in 1796 and granted the “Royal” prefix in 1919, the Royal Army Chaplains’ Department has played a significant role in the British Army’s history, with chaplains serving with distinction in conflicts ranging from the Napoleonic Wars through to modern operations.
This example retains its original east-west eyed shanks to the reverse, a fitting arrangement commonly found on officer-quality cap badges intended for secure attachment to military headwear.
