Royal Army Educational Corps (RAEC) collar badges, pair (1953–1992 pattern), original matching examples of British Army corps insignia associated with the Royal Army Educational Corps.
Manufactured in anodised aluminium as matching pairs, these collar badges were worn by officers and other ranks of the Royal Army Educational Corps on service dress and No. 2 dress uniforms from 1953 until the Corps was disbanded in 1992. Featuring the St Edward’s Crown (Queen’s Crown), this pattern reflects the insignia adopted following the accession of Elizabeth II.
The Royal Army Educational Corps was formed in 1949, succeeding the Army Educational Corps, which had been established during the First World War to improve the education and professional development of British soldiers. The Corps was responsible for providing literacy training, vocational education, language instruction, examination preparation, and military education, helping soldiers develop both military and civilian qualifications throughout their service.
During the Cold War, the Royal Army Educational Corps served wherever the British Army was deployed, including Germany, the United Kingdom, Northern Ireland, Hong Kong, Cyprus, and other overseas garrisons. Educational officers and instructors played an important role in supporting operational effectiveness by delivering academic and technical training, promoting leadership development, and preparing personnel for advancement within the Army.
In 1992, the Royal Army Educational Corps was disbanded as part of a wider reorganisation of army specialist services. Its responsibilities were transferred to the newly formed Adjutant General’s Corps, where they continue under the Educational and Training Services Branch.
Original matched pairs of RAEC collar badges are increasingly sought after by collectors of British military insignia, representing the Corps’ contribution to the education and professional development of generations of British soldiers during the second half of the twentieth century.
Manufactured in stay-brite anodised aluminium with original attachment fittings to the reverse, this matching pair represents an authentic and collectable piece of British Army corps history.
