The badge is manufactured in brown-economy plastic, reflecting the material conservation measures introduced during World War II to reduce the use of strategic metals. Despite its simplified construction, the badge faithfully reproduces the distinctive insignia of the Royal Army Service Corps and represents an important aspect of British wartime military production.

Cap badges of this type were worn on military headwear by officers and other ranks of the Royal Army Service Corps. Responsible for the transport, supply, and distribution of food, fuel, ammunition, and other essential stores, the RASC played a vital role in sustaining British and Commonwealth forces across every theatre of the Second World War. The corps also operated extensive vehicle fleets and provided logistical support that was fundamental to the success of military operations.

Original economy-pattern plastic badges were produced from 1942 onwards as part of Britain’s wartime economy programme. Their manufacture from moulded plastic allowed valuable metals to be diverted to more critical military purposes while ensuring that personnel continued to receive the necessary uniform insignia.

The Royal Army Service Corps served until 1965, when its transport and supply functions were absorbed into the newly formed Royal Corps of Transport and the Royal Army Ordnance Corps, with many of its modern responsibilities now carried out by the Royal Logistic Corps.

Manufactured in moulded plastic with original attachment fittings to the reverse, this example represents an authentic and increasingly collectable piece of British Second World War military insignia.
