Royal Army Service Corps (RASC) Officer’s Cap Badge, George VI Cypher, manufactured by J. R. Gaunt. This officer’s badge represents the Royal Army Service Corps during the reign of King George VI (1936–1952), when the Corps transported and supplied equipment, provisions, ammunition, and other essential stores to British Army formations. The RASC played an important logistical role during the Second World War and the early post-war period.
The badge is constructed of silver plate and gilt, with enamel elements and the Royal Cypher of King George VI. The design includes the Corps’ distinctive insignia, with its associated motto Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense (“Shame on Him Who Thinks Evil of It”). The maker’s name, J. R. Gaunt of London, is associated with the manufacture of British military insignia and uniform accessories. The combination of silver-plate, gilt and enamel is consistent with the more elaborate construction used for officer-quality cap badges. This example is of interest to collectors of Royal Army Service Corps insignia, George VI-era British Army badges and Second World War militaria.
