Royal Marine Light Infantry (RMLI) silver hallmarked sweetheart brooch by George Loveridge & Co., hallmarked 1921, original example of British military sweetheart jewellery associated with the Royal Marine Light Infantry.

Crafted in sterling silver, this attractive sweetheart brooch features the distinctive insignia of the Royal Marine Light Infantry and bears full British hallmarks dating it to 1921. It was manufactured by the renowned Birmingham silversmith George Loveridge & Co., a firm celebrated for producing high-quality military sweetheart brooches, regimental jewellery, and commemorative silverware during the late Victorian, Edwardian, and post-First World War periods.

Sweetheart brooches were privately purchased items, commonly presented by serving servicemen to wives, fiancées, mothers, or sisters as lasting mementoes of military service. They became especially popular during and immediately after the First World War, symbolising both affection and pride in a loved one’s regiment or corps.

The Royal Marine Light Infantry traced its origins to the eighteenth century and served with distinction throughout the British Empire and during the First World War. In 1923, just two years after this brooch was hallmarked, the Royal Marine Light Infantry and the Royal Marine Artillery were amalgamated to form the modern Royal Marines. As a result, sweetheart jewellery bearing the RMLI insignia represents one of the final issues associated with this historic branch before its reorganisation.

George Loveridge & Co. produced some of the finest military sweetheart jewellery of the period, with their silver pieces being particularly prized for their quality of manufacture, detailed craftsmanship, and clear Birmingham hallmarks. Surviving examples in good condition are highly sought after by collectors of military jewellery and Royal Marines memorabilia.

Manufactured in sterling silver with original pin and clasp fittings to the reverse, this example represents an elegant and highly collectable piece of British military and commemorative jewellery.
