Royal Navy Flag Officer’s button brooch, representing the senior ranks of the Royal Navy during the Victorian period. The button features the crowned, fouled anchor with a laurel wreath associated with British naval uniform insignia, reflecting the traditions and authority of the Royal Navy. Flag officers occupied the senior command appointments within the service, and their uniform buttons formed part of the insignia distinguishing naval dress.
Dating from before 1901, this pattern belongs to the period preceding the death of Queen Victoria and the subsequent changes in royal crowned insignia. The broached construction incorporates a pin-style reverse fitting for attachment to uniform clothing, rather than the shank fitting found on standard sew-on buttons. It is of interest to collectors of Victorian Royal Navy uniform buttons, naval insignia and senior officer militaria.
