South African Army Chaplain Corps (Christian) chrome and enamel rank badge, representing the Christian chaplaincy branch of the South African military. Chaplains provide religious ministry, pastoral care and spiritual support to serving personnel, both during peacetime and operational deployments. The South African Chaplain Service developed as a specialist military branch, with its own distinctive uniform insignia and rank identification. This pattern of chrome and enamel insignia is documented in the South African Army uniform system catalogue and was intended for wear on formal military dress uniforms.
The badge is manufactured in chrome-plated metal with purple-coloured enamel detailing, incorporating the Christian religious symbol of the Chi Rho. It is identified in the South African Army insignia catalogue as the Chaplains’ rank badge for Christian chaplains, distinguishing it from the separate Hindu, Jewish and Muslim chaplain insignia. The badge represents a specialist element of South African Army uniform insignia and is of interest to collectors of South African Defence Force and South African National Defence Force militaria, military religious insignia and chrome and enamel rank badges.
