South African First City Regiment cap badge of the 1952–current pattern, mounted on a Montrose tartan backing, as worn by members of this historic Eastern Cape infantry regiment. This badge displays the regiment’s distinctive device in clear relief with the motto “Expecto” beneath, all executed in chrome-plated metal or similar finish and set against the traditional tartan cloth backing associated with Scottish-influenced units. The overall design reflects continuity of regimental tradition from the mid-twentieth century to the present day.
The First City Regiment, originally raised in the nineteenth century, maintains a strong Scottish heritage reflected in its use of tartan and Highland dress distinctions. The Montrose tartan backing forms part of the ceremonial and dress uniform, providing a distinctive visual identity behind the cap badge.
Manufactured in chromed metal with fabric tartan backing, this example provides a well-defined representation of modern South African regimental insignia with historical roots. First City Regiment badges are collected as examples of Commonwealth militaria, Scottish-influenced infantry insignia, and contemporary uniform fittings.
