South African First City Regiment Collar Badge

The First City Regiment traces its origins to 1855 with the formation of the First City Volunteers in Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth). Throughout its history, the regiment has undergone several reorganisations while maintaining an unbroken lineage as one of South Africa’s senior volunteer infantry units.

During the Second Boer War, volunteers from the regiment served in defence of the Cape Colony. In contrast, in the First World War the regiment contributed personnel to campaigns in German South-West Africa and East Africa. Its greatest distinction came during World War II, when the First City Regiment served with the 1st South African Infantry Division in East Africa and North Africa, earning battle honours in campaigns including Sidi Rezegh, El Alamein, and Madagascar. Following the war, the regiment continued its service as part of the Citizen Force of the South African Army.
