South African Police (Native Constables) (SAP) white metal shoulder title (1913–1939 pattern), an original example of South African police insignia associated with the South African Police during the early years of the Union of South Africa.
Manufactured in white metal, the shoulder title bears the initials “SAP” and was worn on the shoulder straps of the uniform by Native Constables serving within the South African Police. Introduced following the establishment of the South African Police in 1913, this pattern remained in use until 1939 and formed part of the distinctive uniform insignia worn by indigenous constables employed by the force during the period.
The South African Police was created in 1913 through the amalgamation of several colonial police organisations following the formation of the Union of South Africa. Native constables carried out a wide range of policing duties under the administrative structure of the force, including patrol work, maintaining public order, escort duties, and assisting in the enforcement of laws across both urban and rural districts. Their uniforms incorporated distinctive insignia that identified their branch within the police service.
This shoulder title reflects the historical organisation of policing in South Africa during the first half of the twentieth century. While it is an authentic artefact from the period, it also represents the segregated structures that existed within government institutions under the policies and practices of the time.
Original South African Police shoulder titles from the Union era are increasingly sought after by collectors of Commonwealth police insignia and South African militaria, particularly examples dating from the early years of the force.
Manufactured in white metal with original attachment fittings to the reverse, this example represents an important piece of South African police history.
