South African Pretoria Regiment (PRETORIA) brass shoulder title badge (1932–1963 pattern), an original example of South African military insignia associated with the Pretoria Regiment.

Manufactured in brass, this shoulder title bears the word “PRETORIA” and was worn on the shoulder straps of service dress and battledress uniforms by members of the Pretoria Regiment between 1932 and 1963. Shoulder titles of this type served to identify a soldier’s unit and formed an important part of the regiment’s distinctive uniform insignia.

The Pretoria Regiment was established in 1913 as part of the newly formed Union Defence Force. Recruiting primarily from the city of Pretoria and the surrounding Transvaal region, the regiment initially served as an infantry unit before later converting to an armoured role. It developed a proud reputation within South Africa’s Citizen Force, maintaining close links with the capital city throughout its history.

During World War II, the Pretoria Regiment served with distinction in North Africa as part of the 1st South African Infantry Division. The regiment took part in major operations, including the battles of Sidi Rezegh and Gazala, before fighting in the decisive Second Battle of El Alamein. Following the war, the regiment was converted to an armoured unit and continued to serve as an important component of the South African Army.

The 1932–1963 brass shoulder title represents the regiment during one of the most significant periods of its history, encompassing both its wartime infantry service and its early post-war armoured role. Original examples are increasingly sought after by collectors of South African and Commonwealth militaria, particularly those associated with the Second World War.

Manufactured in brass with original attachment fittings to the reverse, this example represents an authentic and historically significant piece of South African regimental insignia.
