South Wales Borderers (SWB) mother-of-pearl sweetheart brooch with gilt and enamel, an original example of British Army regimental sweetheart jewellery associated with the South Wales Borderers.

Crafted with a polished mother-of-pearl backing and featuring a finely detailed gilt and enamel regimental badge, this elegant sweetheart brooch was produced as a keepsake to commemorate service with the South Wales Borderers. Worn by the wives, fiancées, mothers, sisters, and sweethearts of serving soldiers, such brooches became enduring symbols of affection, pride, and support, particularly during the first half of the twentieth century.

The South Wales Borderers were formed in 1881 under the Childers Reforms through the amalgamation of the 24th Regiment of Foot with the local militia. The regiment achieved lasting fame for its gallant defence of the mission station at the Battle of Rorke’s Drift during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879, where eleven Victoria Cross awards were earned—more than for any other single action in British military history.

Throughout its history, the regiment served across the British Empire and took part in the Second Boer War, the First World War, and World War II, earning a distinguished reputation for courage and professionalism. In 1969, the South Wales Borderers amalgamated with the Welch Regiment to form the Royal Regiment of Wales, whose traditions are now preserved within the Royal Welsh.

Mother-of-pearl sweetheart brooches were especially popular during the First and Second World Wars. Their attractive iridescent finish, combined with gilt and enamel regimental insignia, made them treasured personal mementoes that were often presented before a soldier’s deployment or retained as cherished family heirlooms.

Original examples in good condition are highly sought after by collectors of British military jewellery and regimental memorabilia, particularly those with intact enamel and well-preserved mother of pearl.

Manufactured with a mother of pearl backing, gilt and enamel regimental badge, and retaining its original brooch fitting, this example represents an authentic and attractive piece of British military social history.
